Events and Outreach |
OK, you’re inspired, you’ve talked to others in your group who want to be part of an eco-justice ministry team. Now what? It’s time to raise the profile of your ministry to get others involved and start making a difference!
Host your own event.
To get things started, you might plan an event just for your youth group. Talk to your youth leader about planning a hike that allows the group to get acquainted with the local environment. While you’re out, take the time to learn about God’s creation and the creatures that live near your community. Or arrange a Bible study that focuses on the Biblical call to protect creation. Include time to discuss how the group feels called to care for creation and brainstorm ideas for other activities that can help your youth group answer that call. Use these events as a way to begin exploring and learning about God’s creation – then start thinking about ways you can act!
Incorporate Eco-Justice activities into other areas of your congregation’s life.
Mission Trips
Is your church planning a mission trip this summer? Find out who’s in charge of planning it, and ask if there can be an eco-justice theme to the trip. Maybe you can help plant trees or create a garden park in a community that needs it. Ask your youth leader to help you think of ideas and find the right person to talk to at your church.
Service Activities in Your Community
Your church may already have a service or outreach committee that works on projects like soup kitchens or canned food drives. Consider planning a joint event where the committee and the youth group work together on an eco-justice project. You might adopt a trail near your community that needs maintenance, or plan a stream cleanup.
Advertise and Promote!
Whenever you hold an event or complete a project, make sure you let your congregation know about it. Find out how to get an announcement or a short article in your congregation’s bulletin or newsletter. The more hear about the good works you are doing, the more they will want to be involved.
